I think this year has been exceptional in terms of the documentaries out there. The Telluride Film Fest just started and here are some of the docs showing! I personally can’t wait to see An Inside Job.

I’ve got a massive head cold (the kind that even your teeth hurt) so if this post sounds foggy, you know why! Well, I did in fact read the book by Stieg Larsson, so I feel as thought I’m automatically going to pooh-pooh it. It almost never works. Right? The good: Great casting call on the part of Lisbeth (main chick) played by Noomi Rapace. She really did an amazing job as the woman of few words with an incredible talent for hacking into anything and everything. Great locations: As I pictured it. Rarity! Ok…that’s about it. The bad: Terrible casting call on the part of Mikael Blomkvist. Michael Nyqvist was so underwhelming and not what I pictured in my mind of an attractive older man. Sorry, I don’t mean to be so blunt, but no no no. The story was linear but the editing was rough and choppy and some interesting aspects of the novel where left out. It could have used a Part One and Two. All in all I just don’t know how anyone including the future American version is going to do any better. Oh well. It’s like you gave a shit when you were reading the book but the movie never really gets you there. The novel has some gruesome scenes that where included and I guess that is why many think director Niels Arden Oplev stayed true to the story, but in my foggy opinion, it was the only real drama that happens in this Pooh-Pooh of a movie!

There is no other way to say this but Kick Ass kicked some serious ass! It has been a while since I’ve seen a movie that captivated my attention the entire length of the film. This movie has everything from nerds, mobsters, comics, action, sex, blood and yes a little girl with a very naughty mouth. Let’s just say that if I were her parents I would have to send her off to some Swiss Boarding School to make myself feel better.
Aaron Johnson plays this nerd who fulfills his dream by becoming a vigilante superhero but finds himself way in over his head when his superhero world is not what he had expected. Although Aaron is your leading man in this flick I have to take my hat off to Chloe Moretz. She plays “Hit Girl” a young superhero who makes you envy her exceptional weapon skills and her overall confident nature. Joined by a fantastic cast this movie will take you on an epic superhero journey. Now go watch this or I’ll kick your ass!

Out Now on DVD – The Runaways

It must be lesbian week here at Cinemiss.com! All will enjoy this little biopic. Let’s just say that there are some surprising performances from Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. They killed it. The story of the all girl band “The Runaways” is straight out of the Cherrie Currie’s (lead singer) book and you can tell. She’s pretty much the center character and Dakota Fanning does a tremendous job portraying the lonely rocker with fucked up parents. The Runaways is also a time capsule fueled by trippy scenes, awesome camera work and a great soundtrack. An extra bonus…Michael Shannon is flawless as Kim Fowley, the tour manager. Ok then…grab a brew, smoke a cigarette and get ready to get your rock on.

Out Now~ The Kids Are Alright

The Kids Are Alright was a surprise for me. I really thought the film was about two teen aged kids of a lesbian couple finding the sperm donor that made them possible. It was SO MUCH MORE. It was dynamic, tackling family, love, lust, teen aged angst and parenting. I laughed, I cried, I felt titillated and related to almost every character in the movie. Julianne Moore is Jules and Annette Bening is Nic, they are the, surprisingly believable, lesbian married couple. Mark Ruffalo plays Paul the donor that made Joni, played beautifully by Mia Wasikowska, and Laser played by Josh Hutcherson. Once the kids connect to Paul the family sort of gets crazy. The acting is aces all the way around and I can’t say enough about Mia’s portrayal of Joni. She is one to watch for sure, I could barely keep it together for the rolling credits when she ends the film. I’m giving an extra half fist for the use of the word “chode”! Three and Half Fists!

Out Now on DVD: Clash of the Titans

If you haven’t seen this movie, you were one of the lucky ones. I must say, that when I saw the trailer I was intrigued. It looked promising and action packed. Boy was I wrong. This movie lacked depth in both the plot and character development. You don’t get to know your main characters at all and frankly they are forgettable. It’s sad because the cast was pretty good. Unfortunately the dialogue sucked and the actors could only do so much with what they were given. This is supposed to be a story about the mortal son of Zeus who is destined to bring balance between the Gods and Mankind while fighting evil creatures. However what you get are chopped up scenes, jumping through time, with the only action appearing in the later half of the movie. Overall this movie was poorly written and it shows.

Out Now – VALHALLA RISING

Well needless to say…last night I was in the mood to sit down on the couch with the husband and watch lame chick flicks and just numb out. But NOOOOO. This guy is always complaining that he never gets to watch mindless dude movies, so what does he decide on??? Read the title of the post for quick answer. After the initial brutal violent scene at the top of the hour, I have to say, it got very very interesting. Brought to you by the very stylish Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson), Valhalla Rising was a quietly loud movie with photography that blew my mind and moments of utter stillness and expectation. This is the story of the land of Vikings and the brutality that transpired by the men promoting the cross and the ways of Christianity. This is also the story of the mute “One Eye”, the legendary heathen (HOTNESS Mads Mikkelsen) and his runaway traveling companion boy (Maarten Stevenson). Their journey begins and ends in Hell. Sounds like a downer I know but you will not be disappointed. The colors shift from blue to red (One Eye sees the future in red) and the moods are set by ambient metal music and the stillness of his gazes. Valhalla is for those of you who like some cult in your historical accountings. A mix of Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog, but all Winding Refn in the style department.

Out Now~Inception

Wow! What a ride. It took Christopher Nolan ten years to write this script and I can certainly see why. It is intricate to say the least. The inner workings of people subconscious is serious and imaginative stuff to tackle. The visuals in this film are stunning. They are not just used to show off, they are integral to the plot which is confusing, I won’t lie. The movie is part psychological drama, part heist and part action. All parts working at the same time. I was kind of annoyed with the ending, I wanted a clear resolution and there was much room for interpretation. This could also be seen as the beauty of the film, you could probably watch it several times and come up with different theories. Leonardo DiCaprio is Cobb a guy who is able to enter others dreams and extract ideas and information. An extremely wealthy and powerful man has hired Cobb to use his dream crashing to plant an idea into the mind of the heir to his rival’s company. This idea would eventually lead to the break up of his father’s corporation. Cobb agrees to the job and puts together his team. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is his old time right hand man Arthur. Tom Hardy is Eames the forger and Ellen Page is the newbie hired on as the architect Ariadne. Ariadne quickly realizes the reason Cobb can’t be the architect is because his dead wife continues to enter his subconscious while he is dream crashing and as you can imagine, she screws shit up big time. The dream within a dream within a dream is where it gets really crazy. Sounds nutty right? Well it’s a fun and confusing ride. A visual spectacle with much to analyze afterwards. My personal fave super sexy Tom Hardy, scene stealer. Four Fists.

Out Now~ Eclipse

Well I finally did it. Put on a hoody, some jeggins, chucks and went to see Eclipse. I had extraordinarily low expectations as I really did not like New Moon and honestly Eclipse was much better. Edward was still sort of annoyingly broody. There were a few moments that weren’t so bad and Jacob was charming. Bella was a bit more likable. I am still at a loss with the hair and make up team. I know the Cullens are pale and ice cold and all but good lord someone ease up on the pancake! The wigs are horrifying also. I recently saw a picture of Ashley Greene, she plays Alice, and she is PRETTY. I couldn’t believe how pretty either, like really pretty, these movies really bring her down a few notches. I don’t know why they ever replaced the original Victoria. She had so much more swagger than Bryce Howard. She is a murderous vampire bent on revenge and Bryce Howard looked like a red eyed deer caught in the camera lense. The movie stays true to the book very well though it felt long. It runs exactly 2 hours long but feels longer. Soundtrack is pretty good and special effects much better. The wolves in particular seemed more realistic this time. Two and Half Fists.

Out On DVD::Rush:Beyond the Lighted Stage

So if you were to ask a bunch of rock music loving chics who their favorite bands are probably none of them would say Rush. It’s pretty much a dude’s band. They’re not very sexy. After this documentary I have a whole new level of love for Rush. These guys are so humble, kind and smart. As they sit and share their lives with us through commentary and old photos and of course concert footage you can just tell that they are not ass holes. That’s huge considering they’ve been selling millions of albums and touring the world for decades and yet they can walk the earth without being totally bombarded by fans and live their lives. Throughout the film rock artists wonder why they never hit the mainstream. Critics always hated them, made horrific comments about Geddy’s voice and the length of their songs etc. In the end though it doesn’t fucking matter. They have staying power. People still buy their albums and concert tickets. Having known very little about this power trio I found this film awesome. Neil Peart you are my hero!
