Out Now~ Shame

This movie is intense.  The subject matter of sex addiction can easily become something of a joke in film but this film is no joke!  Michael Fassbender is naked in every way.  Yes, ladies there is shlong!  Full frontal man parts, long, huge man parts..  Anyway,  Fassbender is Brandon, a success in some ways.  He has a well paying, steady job.  He has a Manhattan apartment.  He is also a sex addict.  This is not a typical horny dude.  This guy is obsessed.  Fassbender makes you feel the anxiety.  He has to have it, whether it’s prostitutes, computer porn, strangers from bars, it’s a relentless obsession.  When Brandon’s sister comes to stay with him his daily routine is disrupted and shit gets real for Brandon.  We witness him try a real date.  We see him get rid of his stash and we see him succomb to a binge.  It’s not easy.   Fassbender’s performance is haunting.  I’d give him an Oscar right now if it were up to me.  I wish the movie provided a bit more background on Brandon and his sister who is played by Carey Mulligan, a raw, fragile performance.

Three Fists

Out Now~ The Descendants

Since awards season is in full effect, I figure it was about time to get some reviews written.  I really found this movie a snore.  I’m sure I’m in the minority seeing as George Clooney is getting all sorts of awards for his performance and the film got the Golden Globe for best film.  It just was meh, yeah meh.. I did appreciate Clooney’s performance, he plays Matt King, a Hawaiian native, father of 2 and husband to a woman in a coma.   Matt’s oldest daughter has to be the one to let him in on the fact that his wife had been having an affair for quite a while before the boating accident that put her in said coma.  Well, this sounds good right?  Juicy, lots to build on, somehow all these wonderful plot points just chug along super slowly.   Alexander Payne wrote and directed this and while I appreciated the script the pacing of the film is what lost me.  Amarie Miller as Scotti, the youngest daughter, is too cute for words, perfect casting.   Shailene Woodley as Alexandra, Matt’s oldest daughter was great too.  Kudos to Mathew Lillard too!  Two and Half Fists.

Writer/Director:  Alexander Payne

Starring:  George Clooney, Judy Greer, Mathew Lillard, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller

Out Now~ DRIVE

Oooh, this film is so good. Ryan Gosling is the “kid”, he drives stunt cars, fixes cars, and drives them for criminals. He falls for a girl and her son.   Problems then arise, the girl, Carey Mulligan, is married.  This is film noir with a lot of blood.   The violence was pretty graphic but it’s okay. You will be so enthralled in what is happening, what will happen, what just happened, that you wont mind it. Albert Brooks is an absolute revelation as a true gangsta!  Bryan Cranston as Shannon, the garage owner, proves once again how versatile he is.  I was mightily impressed. Everything works, the dialogue, the silence, the action sequences, the violence, and the L.A streets. You walk out thinking many things, “can a shark be a good guy?” Four Fists!

Writer:  Hossein Amini (screenplay)  James Sallis (book)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Starring:  Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston

YASMIN WADE - Ryan Gosling is the old or new Mickey Rourke. Subtle, scary & a huge turn on. The movie is well directed. Constant misdirects and quiet moments. Would love to read this script and how it ended up reading on film. My favorite in a long long time. A movie to own.October 19, 2011 - 4:49 pm

Adam F - Totally agree! My favorite part was the soundtrack, but it's so hard to pick a favorite thing because everything in this movie works!October 6, 2011 - 5:19 pm

Out Now~ Crazy Stupid Love

I really liked this movie though I thought I would love it. I think that if it were rated R and had a little more sex, it would have been perfect. Ryan Gosling steals the show as the man about town teaching Steve Carell how to get over his wife who cheated on him after 25 years of marriage. The movie starts off really strong but then gets kind of slow and putters out. It was a little long for no reason. I was surprised with the plot twist and the final few scenes are pretty damned funny. Ryan Gosling’s Jacob should have had even more screen time and definitley more sexy time and I don’t think any gal out there who saw this would disagree. Steve Carell was great as was Julianne Moore. Didn’t love Emma Stone, her story was the weakest.    Three Fists.

Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Writer: Dan Fogelman
Starring: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marissa Tomeii

Out Now ~ Winnie The Pooh

I loved this movie though it is so short I don’t think you need to spend theater prices to see it. My older daughter loved it, it is funny and sweet. The story is typical Pooh fare, the voices spot on!  But it was over in an hour. So see it on DVD! Three Fists!

On DVD ~ Source Code

Source Code is a one of those films that repeats the same scene over and over because the plot involved some sort of time traveling hero that needs to change certain circumstances in order to prevent a major catastrophe. Although we’ve seen similar ideas being played out before this film is really interesting. Jake Gyllenhaal is really great as the “dead” soldier being used in an experiment to travel back in time in order to catch terrorist and other crazy ass criminals before they kill thousands of innocent people. I really like this Duncan Jones dude, Moon is on of my favorite films of the last few years. Even though the movie is an adventure film it asks some big questions. How would you live your last minute knowing it was your last minute? I smell sequel…. Three Fists

Writer: Ben Ripley
Director: Duncan Jones
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan

Out Now~ Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is hysterical. You need to grab your girlfriends and go see this. I love seeing Kirsten Wiig sort of normal. She is such a creep on SNL, it’s too much. Wiig plays Annie, a normal gal in her 30′s with a failed business just behind her, a one sided honest and unsatisfying relationship with Ted, John Hamm, and her best friend, Lillian played by Maya Rudolph, just got engaged. Now, Annie will be Lillian’s Maid of Honor while duking it out with Lillian’s newest besty Helen, an always pretty millionaire played by Rose Byrne. All the while she is completely broke and lonely. The movie is kind of long though and lucky for the rest of the cast Melissa McCarthy was in this one. She steals every scene she is in. She sells it big time! Judd Apatow scores again, Maya Rudolph was a bit of a snore but it’s so good to see an all female cast in a good comedy!  Three Fists!!

Writer: Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo
Director: Paul Feig
Starring: Kirsten Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, John Hamm

On DVD~ Blue Valentine

Yeah, I know it’s been a while. I’ve actually seen plenty of movies I’ve just had little motivation to write about them until last night when I finally got to see this gem. It was a bummer but in a very good way. This film CLOSELY examines the relationship of married couple Dean, Ryan Gosling, and Cindy, Michelle Williams. The movie starts in the present and then takes breaks back to where they met and how they ended up married. What I loved most about this movie is how I woke up still thinking about these two people. Every single scene revealed something about them, by what they said or how they were treated by others. I felt like a fly on the wall and that is not easy to do. The story is simple but the characters are not. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are the real deal. The receeding hair line on Ryan was pretty damned good too, their little girl Frankie, Faith Wladyka, was incredibly sweet. Three and 1/2 Fists!!

Writer/Director: Derek Cianfrance
Starring: Michelle Williams, Ryan Gosling

Out Now~ Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

I saw the first installment of these last summer. My kids seemed to kind of get, but this film deals with middle school. Well, it would have been more fun for my kids if they were like 5 years older. It’s my fault, my daughter picked it, she was very skeptical of that Rango dude so I thought, what the hell. In watching this I realized that my days of dealing with annoying children are just beginning. Good Gawd, I guess you just don’t catch a break. The Heffley family is back and this time Greg’s problems with Rodrick have escalated and he has a major crush on the new girl in town, Holly.  The movie is funny, there is no danger so my kids were not at all scared. Greg, the wimpy kid, has a hell of time dealing with Rodrick, he totally sucks!  He just embarrasses the guy to no end.  Rodrick throws a crazy party when the parents are out of town and that brings the brothers closer.   The movie ends with a talent show.  Three Fists.

Director:  Thor Freudenthal

Writer:  Jeff Filgo

Starring:  Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris
