Movies, movies, movies. We love them. We love to go and see them, talk about them, analyze them. We are Cinemiss. Based in LA and San Francisco, we'll span the theatres and video stores for some entertainment and hopefully report back to you so you wont have to waste your time or money. At the end of the day, we hope that we've either informed, warned or made you wonder about a certain film. Hell, we may even piss you off at times.
Disagree or agree with something we wrote? We welcome any and all kinds of comments. Four fists = four stars.
I went to see this with 2 gals who are also moms and we all laughed a lot. The first half of the film is really funny. Jennifer Westfeld wrote, directed, and stars in this gem. She plays Julie who along with her “friend” of 19 years Jason, played by Adam Scott, have a baby together. They decide to forgo all the marriage BS that they see their friends go through once they procreate. Instead, they will do it one time, get knocked up, share the baby, 50/50. As you might imagine things aren’t that simple. The cast is great. Jon Hamm is his usual yummy self just a complete ass hole. Kristen Wiig plays his wife but barely utters 3 words the entire film, kind of weird. Chris Odowd is the funniest of the bunch, as the sex starved hubby of Maya Rudolph. Megan Fox does nothing surprising. Edward Burns is still handsome though if he did some yoga with the Mrs., it wouldn’t be a bad thing, (maybe a little core work). The film is spot on in many ways. I had to wonder how these two were friends for 19 years and NEVER got it on, come on now!! Anyway, that aside and the fact that it’s just too long, I liked it a lot! Three Fists!

I’m the last one that should be watching apocalyptic flicks! I’m somewhat of a doomsdayer myself. I even packed up our basement and turned it into a refuge for when H1N1 was upon us. I learned my lesson big time by the time the swine flue came around. Needless to say, this movie is a bit of a creeper. Totally psychological thriller at the beginning then slowly unraveling into a full blown horror in some ways. Our main man Curtis LaForche (really well played by Michael Shannon), starts to have the strangest of dreams. Mostly involving oil slicked rain and creepy faceless folks going after his daughter. The dreams become so intense that he begins to have them in his waking life. Hallucinations, paranoia and all around crazy, start to hinder his family and work life. Is he insane? Is this all real? After building the ultimate shelter and nearly bankrupting his meager savings, people start to wonder if he’s a lost cause. Even Curtis himself tries his darnedest to seek mental stability but to no avail. Won’t give any more away but let’s just say that I was pleasantly surprised at the quiet anticipation of this film. The cinematography isn’t so shabby either. Now go to the grocery store and buy that extra can of pinto beans! Ok? Two and Half Fists

I should start this review by admitting that I did not read the book. I should also say that I had a bit of a tude so I was a tough customer to please. I just wasn’t blown away. When Emma’s character Skeeter decides to write a book based on the viewpoint of the “help” life in Mississippi gets hectic. The story takes place in the 60′s when segregation was still going strong and black people were living a hellish experience. I will say the cast was amazing. I really thought everyone had incredible performances. I’m still not an Emma Stone fan however. I’ve been told that the Kathryn Stockett novel was much better and I believe it. The film just comes off sort of schmaltzy. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are amazing. Octavia Spencer is deserving of all the accolades in my opinion. Bryce Howard made a great racist snob and Jessica Chastain was a revelation. She was a welcome surprise in this sort of one note movie. I did not get the point of the “relationship” Emma Stone’s Skeeter had with a boy, Stuart, played by Chris Lowell. The whole romance just ended abruptly and weirdly, they could have omitted that whole storyline. The movie is really long. I don’t know why it was necessary to make it 146 minutes long. My final admission, I cried. Two and Half Fists.

This movie is intense. The subject matter of sex addiction can easily become something of a joke in film but this film is no joke! Michael Fassbender is naked in every way. Yes, ladies there is shlong! Full frontal man parts, long, huge man parts.. Anyway, Fassbender is Brandon, a success in some ways. He has a well paying, steady job. He has a Manhattan apartment. He is also a sex addict. This is not a typical horny dude. This guy is obsessed. Fassbender makes you feel the anxiety. He has to have it, whether it’s prostitutes, computer porn, strangers from bars, it’s a relentless obsession. When Brandon’s sister comes to stay with him his daily routine is disrupted and shit gets real for Brandon. We witness him try a real date. We see him get rid of his stash and we see him succomb to a binge. It’s not easy. Fassbender’s performance is haunting. I’d give him an Oscar right now if it were up to me. I wish the movie provided a bit more background on Brandon and his sister who is played by Carey Mulligan, a raw, fragile performance.

Since awards season is in full effect, I figure it was about time to get some reviews written. I really found this movie a snore. I’m sure I’m in the minority seeing as George Clooney is getting all sorts of awards for his performance and the film got the Golden Globe for best film. It just was meh, yeah meh.. I did appreciate Clooney’s performance, he plays Matt King, a Hawaiian native, father of 2 and husband to a woman in a coma. Matt’s oldest daughter has to be the one to let him in on the fact that his wife had been having an affair for quite a while before the boating accident that put her in said coma. Well, this sounds good right? Juicy, lots to build on, somehow all these wonderful plot points just chug along super slowly. Alexander Payne wrote and directed this and while I appreciated the script the pacing of the film is what lost me. Amarie Miller as Scotti, the youngest daughter, is too cute for words, perfect casting. Shailene Woodley as Alexandra, Matt’s oldest daughter was great too. Kudos to Mathew Lillard too! Two and Half Fists.

We love thinking outside the box, so we here at Cinemiss are thrilled to support filmmakers who are trying to fund their work through Kickstarter. You can give any amount of money and you will only be charged if the project reaches it’s goal in a specific amount of time. Below are two projects that we love!!! Please check them out and consider throwing them a bone!!
Oooh, this film is so good. Ryan Gosling is the “kid”, he drives stunt cars, fixes cars, and drives them for criminals. He falls for a girl and her son. Problems then arise, the girl, Carey Mulligan, is married. This is film noir with a lot of blood. The violence was pretty graphic but it’s okay. You will be so enthralled in what is happening, what will happen, what just happened, that you wont mind it. Albert Brooks is an absolute revelation as a true gangsta! Bryan Cranston as Shannon, the garage owner, proves once again how versatile he is. I was mightily impressed. Everything works, the dialogue, the silence, the action sequences, the violence, and the L.A streets. You walk out thinking many things, “can a shark be a good guy?” Four Fists!

YASMIN WADE - Ryan Gosling is the old or new Mickey Rourke. Subtle, scary & a huge turn on.
The movie is well directed. Constant misdirects and quiet moments. Would love to read this script and how it ended up reading on film. My favorite in a long long time.
A movie to own.October 19, 2011 - 4:49 pm
Adam F - Totally agree! My favorite part was the soundtrack, but it's so hard to pick a favorite thing because everything in this movie works!October 6, 2011 - 5:19 pm
I really liked this movie though I thought I would love it. I think that if it were rated R and had a little more sex, it would have been perfect. Ryan Gosling steals the show as the man about town teaching Steve Carell how to get over his wife who cheated on him after 25 years of marriage. The movie starts off really strong but then gets kind of slow and putters out. It was a little long for no reason. I was surprised with the plot twist and the final few scenes are pretty damned funny. Ryan Gosling’s Jacob should have had even more screen time and definitley more sexy time and I don’t think any gal out there who saw this would disagree. Steve Carell was great as was Julianne Moore. Didn’t love Emma Stone, her story was the weakest. Three Fists.
Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Writer: Dan Fogelman

I loved this movie though it is so short I don’t think you need to spend theater prices to see it. My older daughter loved it, it is funny and sweet. The story is typical Pooh fare, the voices spot on! But it was over in an hour. So see it on DVD! Three Fists!

Source Code is a one of those films that repeats the same scene over and over because the plot involved some sort of time traveling hero that needs to change certain circumstances in order to prevent a major catastrophe. Although we’ve seen similar ideas being played out before this film is really interesting. Jake Gyllenhaal is really great as the “dead” soldier being used in an experiment to travel back in time in order to catch terrorist and other crazy ass criminals before they kill thousands of innocent people. I really like this Duncan Jones dude, Moon is on of my favorite films of the last few years. Even though the movie is an adventure film it asks some big questions. How would you live your last minute knowing it was your last minute? I smell sequel…. Three Fists
